Description

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America inaugurated National Commemorative Candle Lighting because it recognized the need for a day of national unity—for Americans to join together to remember and honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses.

AFA engages local organizations across the U.S. to participate in this event by holding inspirational, non-denominational candle lighting ceremonies in their communities. Programs typically include a lighting of "candles of care," reciting of names in remembrance and recognition, readings by religious leaders of various denominations, and comments by those whose lives have been touched by dementia.

Continuing this sentiment year-round, AFA invites the public to record the names of their loved ones in a Book of Remembrance.

National Commemorative Candle Lighting was introduced in November 2003, and is held each November in recognition of National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month.
